I think it is necessary to emphasize one point: efficient application cannot be equated with productivity, and productivity depends on the scenario. If it is leisure time on weekends, you can naturally play with various functions in detail, from Java, SQL to CSS; work-related is obviously not possible, under the pressure of DDL, everything obeys the ultimate goal: delivery. Using a new tool at work becomes a risky thing: it might be faster if you use it, but you won’t be slower if you don’t use it.

There are two difficulties in writing research reports: one is information fragmentation. In the report writing process, it is necessary to read various industry reports, papers, feedback materials, expert opinions, relevant policies, meeting minutes, etc. The channels are very diverse, and it is difficult to say that the entire collection process can be completed with one tool; the second is the fragmentation of writing time change. In actual work, it is difficult to spend a whole day in the library writing papers like when I was a student, especially the epidemic prevention and control policy at that time required me to devote myself to prevention and control work at any time, and completed it without a fixed writing place. The first draft became another challenge.

Based on my needs, I adjusted the workflow step by step:

  1. Acquisition Tools——Cubox and Jianyue

A collection tool, that is, a read-later-annotation tool. The most famous of these is undoubtedly Jianyue, but the way of using Jianyue on the mobile terminal does not meet my needs. I need to download kiwi separately, and the synchronization assistant can only be used on the desktop. For those who need to query and organize at any time On the one hand, it is undoubtedly very difficult to use Jianyue.

So I opted for this silly clipping tool like Cubox. In addition, the search and browsing record function of Cubox is really easy to use! I can’t say it’s a perfect solution ⌈ I seem to have seen this problem somewhere ⌋, but it does make a significant difference.

But I didn’t give up using Jianyue either. Jianyue’s reading experience is indeed the best today, and cubox’s typesetting experience is relatively too clear. So I use Jianyue lightly, limited to web page reading and annotation.

Of course, there will be a problem here: the label will be in cubox for a while, and in Jianyue for a while. Is it not good to be inconsistent?

I struggled with it for a while, but soon I solved the problem myself: find a transfer station.

2. Entrance (transfer station/draft): Seeds 思记

You can clip and save at will, but you still need to be cautious when choosing to enter the personal note library. Many times I don’t want to export the original text and annotations to the note library. I hope that most of the content in the note library is written by myself. ⌈If it is not necessary, do not add citations⌋. Of course, I am not a ⌈fundamentalist⌋ who never quotes, and it is unavoidable that the original text must be used for explanation. The emphasis here is not to add more citations, it is more to force yourself to carry out Feynman-style thinking training.

So between clipping and notes, I think a transfer station/sticky note/scratch tool is also needed. This tool must at least meet the following characteristics: full platform, fast recording, fast copy/export, and the outline is the best (don’t care about the connection between blocks). Of course, using ob, logseq, and notion itself can naturally complete the work of quick recording, but I personally think that it is better to artificially separate ⌈draft ⌋ and ⌈note ⌋. Because in the process of transforming information into knowledge, the most important thing is our jumping thinking. First, we need to record these things quickly. Second, these records are illogical and need secondary processing before they can become permanent notes. .

In short, I think fleeting notes and permanent notes should use two tools (at least two libraries), rather than combine them into one and put them both in the same application. Both need to be reviewed, the difference is that when reviewing fleet notes, a random method is often used, which can stimulate our neurons when recalling previous brainstorming, in order to “grow new shoots;” while permanent notes are mostly purposeful queries , After all, it is a work that we have sorted out and can be labeled as self-marked, and it is more about “picking the fruit”. Of course, permanent notes are not permanent, but when it comes to Evergreen notes (Evergreen), that is another topic. It was mentioned in detail in Dr. Yanyan’s series of articles , so I won’t go into details here.

Personally, I chose Seeds, an outline card double-chain note software as a tool for fleeting notes. An important reason for using Si Ji is that I can easily realize the process of “draft – card box”: the content in the diary can be recorded quickly without entering the title; when the content is complete enough, it will be automatically recorded after entering the title Included in ⌈Notes⌋, you can easily distinguish what is a draft and what is a note. In addition, the md format of Siji is more suitable whether it is copied to Siyuan or ob, so there is no need to bother to make two adjustments.

Another important reason for choosing Seeds is that it is a full platform: web, MAC, WIN, Android and iOS. I would like to especially praise the fact that there is a web page, allowing my old office computer (4G storage + 5th generation i3) to use modern dual-chain note-taking tools, which really moved me a little.

Every worker should have a draft book. Of course, paper and pen are the choices that will never fall behind. The most basic requirement for an electronic draft book/notepad/notebook is: it can be synchronized across multiple platforms. In fact, the basic functions of seeds and logseq are very close, but the reason why I finally fell into the arms of seeds is that free official synchronization is a very important reason. Less fuss is sometimes a kind of happiness, and the same reason is paid for Siyuan.

Before a report or piece goes to the final writing session, I write a MOC in Seeds to manually pull together related notes. After the revision of Seeds 1.6, the new canvas (that is, whiteboard) function made it easier to organize ideas: I directly drag the relevant note cards into the canvas, and then connect and add descriptions while thinking, Form the final outline.

3. Writing and drafting

There are a lot of writing tools. Considering that research reports are mostly text, I usually complete the writing of pure text manuscripts in Obsidian out of habit. I am personally very satisfied with the coding experience of plug-ins such as Typewriter scroll and Easy typing. In the final typesetting, I will put the article in Siyuan, and Siyuan can easily complete the typesetting of graphics and texts without much trouble (it takes a little effort to typesetting ob pictures), and it also provides one-click copy to Zhiyuan It can be exported to .docx files, which is perfect for publishing articles. In addition, Siyuan also plays a final filing/reference role here, and Siyuan’s search is still a little easier to use than Obsidian.

I have been wandering between Siyuan and Obsidian before, but after using seeds, I suddenly figured it out: seeds contain my ideas, ob and Siyuan contain my works, and there is absolutely no need for the works to be distributed between several It’s tangled where it is displayed, why not use it at the same time? This can also be regarded as a practice of lightly using heavy tools: take obsidian’s customizability and Siyuan’s ease of use, and try to avoid programming/deep tossing.

Three, some thoughts

I read the book “Card Note Writing Method” in 21 years. At that time, the practice of card notes was limited to reading notes. This year, I combined card notes with work. The biggest feeling is: no longer afraid of DDL up!

In the past, when writing 4D materials, I always fell into the embarrassing situation that 80% of the energy and time were spent on the beginning, and finally rushed to the end before the DDL. This year, after practicing the card note writing method in the actual writing work, the notes are often completed when I consult the materials. For example, when I was looking up the “Experience of Reform and Development of Suzhou Industrial Park”, several notes I made in succession actually constituted the main body of the second part of the report, “Development Experience of Advanced Regions at Home and Abroad”. Simply open the seeds, find the relevant cards, and then use the “copy full text” function to paste them all into obsidian, and then simply edit the connecting sentences between paragraphs.

In this way, the pressure of writing is greatly diluted: compared to writing 10,000 words a week, there is no pressure to write 10,000 words a month. I just need to form a habit: form reading notes after reading each material, sort out meeting speeches after field research to form meeting notes, and browse the note library when I have a relatively long free time to combine notes on related topics. Form a first draft on a defined topic. In fact, as the work continues to advance, the final draft is completed along with the notes. After taking notes for the entire research work, it actually means that the first draft has been written.

Another feeling is the issue of tool selection. I think there is no need to worry about the problem of data scattering, as long as the entrance and exit are well grasped. For me, my entrance is seeds, and my exit is Siyuan. As for which tools are used for collecting, writing, and marking, I don’t think there is any need to worry about it. The advantages of cubox’s full platform, the excellent reading experience of Jianyue, the purity of obsidian plain text, the beautiful motion effect of Thorn when writing, and the unique creative process of Lattics… either or not is not the only choice for users, a combination of various tools It is also a Power User to use its advantages for my own use.

Another little feeling is that the notes must have a title. Many friends are very disgusted with the title of the note, thinking that the pressure of the title is too great. But I think notes and personal mood or thought records are two different things. Notes must have a theme, just big or small. Regarding how note titles come about, I am personally deeply influenced by this article: The Art of Card Note Prefix Encoding . Quoting a sentence from the article: “What we are tired of is the preset structure and the inflexible folder management, not the structure itself.” Having a naming system of your own is a necessary action to improve the card reuse rate.

Finally, I still want to repeat a suggestion that has been repeated before: if a worker wants to be good at a job, he must first sharpen his tool. But “sharp tools” are still for “fortification” in the final analysis, especially the batch of modern note-taking tools that appeared 20 years later. Without hundreds of thousands of notes, it is difficult to play their due role. Finding a field that allows you to study hard, get into flow, accumulate silently, grow quietly, and create your own digital garden is the most fundamental way to protect yourself in this information flood age.
