John William Godward was an English painter of the late Neoclassical era. He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, but with the rise of modern art his style of painting gradually fell out of favor. He died by suicide at the age of 61, and is said to have written in his suicide note: “The world is not big enough for me and a Picasso.”
The setting used by the artist is typical of ancient Rome and Greece. He would delve into the architecture of both periods to ensure his depictions were accurate. Golddot typically used these marble features as background elements, placing women in classical clothing in the foreground. In addition, his work includes some semi-nude and fully nude figures. In such paintings, careful study of detail is essential. Lawrence Alma-Tadema, the most famous painter of the Victorian era, was also an archaeologist. He visited historical sites and collected artifacts that were later used in his paintings. Golddot also studied details such as architecture and clothing to ensure his work bears the stamp of authenticity.
