Doctors successfully transplant 3D printed human ear

A 20-year-old woman who was born with a small and deformed right ear has successfully implanted a 3D-printed ear made from her own cells . Experts believe the procedure represents a major advance in the field of human tissue engineering. According to regenerative medicine company 3DBio Therapeutics, the artificial ear is shaped to precisely match the left ear and will continue to generate cartilage tissue that has the look and feel of a natural ear. The company did not disclose technical details. The surgery was part of a clinical trial involving 11 patients, and the transplant could fail or have unexpected complications. Company officials say the cells used in the 3D-printed implants come from the patient’s own and are therefore unlikely to be rejected by the body.
