American Doreen Bogdan-Martin has been selected as the next secretary general of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) , succeeding China’s Houlin Zhao. She is also the first female secretary-general of the ITU. She won 139 votes to rival Rashid Ismailov of Russia with 25 votes. In her victory statement, she said the world faces enormous challenges — escalating conflict, a climate crisis, food security, gender inequality, and the lack of internet access for 2.7 billion people. She believed that the ITU could help solve some of these problems.
