ESA prepares to upgrade software on Mars Express

ESA launched the Mars Express spacecraft in 2003, and it has been operating for more than 19 years. The most important discovery is the discovery of a huge glacial lake under the surface of Mars. The key scientific instrument that helped make this discovery is Sub-Surface Sounding Radar Altimeter (MARSIS). The software of MARSIS was designed more than 20 years ago and the development environment is Windows 98. The reason for using Windows 98 instead of NT is presumed to be better compatibility with DOS, and earlier embedded tools were working under DOS. ESA plans to upgrade MARSIS’ software to improve signal reception and data processing, increasing the quantity and quality of scientific data sent to Earth.
