Pinwan, February 1st, according to Bloomberg News, the European Union is evaluating a new proposal: let Apple, Netflix, Alphabet and other technology companies that occupy the most broadband resources fund the construction of next-generation Internet infrastructure.
The proposal was put forward by the EU’s executive arm from a “fair-share” vision that would require big tech companies that provide streaming video and other data-intensive services to participate in paying for the traffic they generate. The draft document, part of consultations with industry, suggests companies could contribute to a fund to offset the cost of building 5G mobile networks and fiber optic infrastructure, and create a mandatory system to induce tech giants to pay telecom operators.

This proposal has caused much controversy. The European Union’s electronic communications watchdog found in October that there was “no evidence” that platforms such as Netflix or YouTube should pay telcos to invest in internet infrastructure, saying such a move could cause “significant damage to the internet ecosystem”.
