Extreme weather hits China

Various parts of China are grappling with emergencies caused by extreme weather, with the worst flooding in decades in the south flooding houses and cars and record heat waves in northern and central provinces causing road heave. In Shaoguan, the manufacturing hub, the government has ordered factories to shut down as river water levels have risen to their highest level in 50 years. According to the Guangdong Provincial Emergency Management Department, 479,600 people have been affected by heavy rains and floods, 27.13 hectares of crops have been destroyed, 1,729 houses have collapsed, and the direct economic loss has reached 1.756 billion yuan. Meanwhile, a surface temperature of 70 degrees Celsius was measured last week somewhere in Henan province, causing the cement pavement to break in what looked like an earthquake. The two weather emergencies that China is experiencing at the same time reflect a global trend of more frequent and longer-lasting extreme weather caused by climate change.
