Dutch company Fairphone has announced that it will end support for its modular smartphone, the Fairphone 2, seven years after its release, in March 2023. Fairphone 2 was launched in October 2015 and is only available in the UK and Europe. It is designed and manufactured by an OEM factory in China and costs 525 euros. Customers can buy spare parts to fix hardware problems, and the phone will continue to receive software updates . It has an expected useful life of 5 years, but is ultimately supported for up to 7 years. The Snapdragon 801 SoC used by Fairphone 2 was announced by Qualcomm as early as 2016 to stop supporting it. The company’s 2021 Fairphone 4 comes with a five-year hardware warranty and six-year software updates. For a small company with limited resources, its support for its products dwarfs the likes of Samsung and Google.
