Chikusa Kiyani was a “Japanese painting” painter and painting teacher in the Taisho and Showa periods in Japan. Born in Osaka, she went to Tokyo to learn from the Japanese “beauty painting” painter Ikeda Jiaoyuan. In 1915, Qianzhong returned to Osaka and studied under the tutelage of Hengfu Kitano. She later established her own painting association there, dedicated to nurturing, mentoring and advancing the status of female painters throughout her life.
The title of this work, “Far Land”, is taken from a song on the Buddhist Obon festival. Children in Osaka line up in their community, singing to welcome the spirits of their ancestors back from the afterlife. In July 1918, Qianzhong lost his younger brother, who died of illness, so he painted this work in memory of him. Through the girl looking back at the little boy, we discover a thousand emotions recalling her deceased brother.
