The development team of the Fedora distribution plans to change the way Linux graphics is handled , which, if successful, will help push Linux graphics support forward. The planned changes are in two phases: the upcoming release of Fedora 36 will remove the old fbdev driver, leaving only DRM and KMS; Fedora 37, released later this year, proposes to remove the X.org server driver. The Fedora release is planning to require devices to support UEFI firmware and stop supporting legacy BIOS firmware. The removal of old tools and drivers increases the complexity of graphics processing, such as the fbdev mechanism was introduced in kernel 2.1.109 released in 1999.
