Today we want to present something unique, this female terracotta figurine from 3500 – 3400 BC! To give you a comparison of some of the things that happened in the world at that time: we know that the first known zoo opened in Hierakonpolis (Egyptian city), humans discovered tin, and wheeled transportation was in Mesopotamia It is known outside the Caucasus and has spread to northern Caucasus and Europe. Sounds like a long time ago! What is even more surprising is that we can now see examples of human creativity from more than 5,000 years ago.
But back to this figurine, also known as “Mrs. Bird”: she has a small head and a beak-like face on a long neck that extends to the shoulders. She stretches her arms gracefully, her hands are bent inward, her thumbs are spread apart, and the fingers have sharp grooves on either side, then naturally graded by length. Her legs do not have feet, but are cylindrical with a very shallow groove between them.
The bird-shaped face may represent the human nose, the source of life’s breath. The white skirt also has its meaning and also represents people of high status.
