For many people, it’s not hard to do something, but it’s hard to start. As the old saying goes, the beginning of everything is difficult.
I used to write an article saying that many people asked me to do iOS well, but I found that many of them have been consulting for several years, but they still haven’t started to write the first line of code. At the same time, there are also some people who have grown into the leaders in the industry after a few years, and are out-of-the-box domain experts.
Comparing these people’s educational background, intelligence, and even personality, it is difficult to distinguish the two types of people.
Recently, I have been chatting a lot with the media, and I also found a similar phenomenon.
Every time we chat in a retreat, how to choose a platform, how to create content, how to analyze popular trends, how to meet readers’ preferences, etc., etc., you will find that most people chat very high. But when asked about the current progress, many people were dumbfounded. Some have registered We-Media accounts, posted one or two videos, or the articles are no longer updated, but they are not the least successful among them. Most people chat happily, but even registering an account has been delayed for several years.
Many people attribute this to perfectionist tendencies. If I start writing a public account today, if I don’t write the first one for a week, and if I don’t come up, I will make an explosion of 100,000+ dollars. I will never do it; Yin, I’m going to have millions of likes in one night; or not to mention the number of views, I’m going to make a YouTube video today, so I’ll first hire three professional photographers, a director, and a light to shoot, right?
Of course, if your goals are so lofty and you expect to achieve them so quickly, it’s really hard. After all, there are many tens of millions of Internet celebrities, but there are very few people like Mr. He who are popular and become popular.
There are also many people who attribute this to procrastination, which does make sense. However, if you don’t procrastinate on some things, why do you procrastinate when starting a new project? Where is the problem?
Fire on the move
The blog “JOEL ON SOFTWARE” article Fire and Motion once mentioned,
When I was a paratrooper in Israel, a general came to teach us actual combat tactics. He tells us that there is really only one infantry tactic: fire on the move. You shoot at the enemy as you fire, and the fire keeps the enemy from looking up and can’t fire at you (when a soldier shouts “cover me”, he means “as I ran across the street, you slammed into the enemy” Fire, force him to cat up, can’t fire at me). Go forward, you can take the position and get close to the enemy, so you have a much better chance of winning. If you don’t rush forward, the enemy will have time to figure out the situation , this is not good. If you don’t fire, the enemy will fire on you and knock you down.
We all know that guns have a crosshair, but in real combat, most of the time you don’t aim strictly, the core problem is suppressing fire and then rushing forward. After all, most people are not snipers, and a real big battle can’t just rely on sniping.
Most of the time, we live and work the same way. We don’t have amazing insights anytime, anywhere, and know how to do it step by step to achieve overall victory. Because we are not playing chess after all, and life is much more complicated than the game of chess.
If you ask me, should I turn left or right ahead if I want to go to the Victory Hotel. We can tell you a definitive answer right away. However, if you say, I want to have the best life, please, should I go to work immediately, or take a postgraduate entrance examination. In fact, there is often no certain answer.
Going left is also life, and going right is life. Many times, we have no way to evaluate.
Our lives and our work are often full of open-ended questions. Not even a single option to go left or go right.
I remember a fable about an old man sitting on the side of the road basking in the sun. A young man came over and asked the old man for directions. He was going to Rome. The old man told him that he could get there if he walked along the road in front of him. The young man asked, how long will it take me to get there. The old man said, you go. When the young man asks again, the old man still says, you go.
The young man was very unhappy and continued to walk. After walking a few steps, the old man said that it would take about three hours.
The young man was puzzled, I thought you didn’t want to talk to me anymore. Why did you tell me the answer when I was about to go far. The old man said, if you don’t go, I don’t know your speed at all. If you walk a few steps, I can probably estimate that you can walk there in 3 hours.
In fact, our life and work are often like this. If you don’t write iOS code, Tianwang Laozi doesn’t know if you write well or not. If you don’t do self-media, neither do you know whether you are doing well or not.
The same is true for yourself, the only way to know if you can do something well is to try it.
Where is the road?
Many people like to ask, where is the road. Lu Xun said a word, hope is nothing to have, nothing to do. This is just like a road on earth. In fact, there is no road on earth, and as many people walk, it becomes a road.
The world we face and the problem space we are in are often like climbing mountains in the fog. We don’t know which way is right, and we can’t see all the peaks. We just want to go to the highest peak. How to climb it? Step by step, looking from the front, crawling towards the most upward road in front of you.
Sometimes, we climb to a peak, we check its height, and if it’s not the highest height in the legend, we go down and move on to the next peak.
No one knows where the only right way is, you wait for the fog to clear? I’m sorry, the future is always confusing, and the fog of life can never be dissipated.
We can only advance step by step, firing on the move, moving forward slowly from position to position.
