According to reports, local time on Thursday, Ford and Australian mining company BHP Billiton signed a nickel supply agreement. BHP Billiton’s Western Nickel in Western Australia will supply nickel to Ford. In addition to Ford, BHP has also signed nickel supply agreements with Tesla and Toyota. Nickel is a key material in making electric car batteries, making them energy-dense and allowing cars to go farther on a single charge. In February, Ford Chief Executive Jim Farley revealed that the company was working to find sources of supply to secure supplies of key battery raw materials such as lithium, nickel, rare earths and copper.
