The Wall Street Journal reported on December 6 that PepsiCo will cut hundreds of jobs at the headquarters of its North American snack and beverage division, according to people familiar with the matter. Cuts in the drinks business will be even steeper, as cuts have already been made in the snacks division through a voluntary retirement scheme.
The layoffs affect the company’s North American beverage business in Purchas, N.Y., as well as its North American snacks and packaged food operations headquartered in Chicago and Plano, Texas. In a notice sent to employees, PepsiCo told employees that the purpose of layoffs is to “simplify the organizational structure in order to improve operational efficiency.” According to the report, this shows that the company’s austerity spending measures are spreading beyond the technology and media industries.
