AI technology found more than 20,000 undeclared swimming pools, giving French tax authorities a windfall . Because building a pool can increase house prices, which means higher property taxes, owners need to declare under French law. The annual tax for a swimming pool with an average size of 30 square meters is 200 euros. There were more than 3.2 million private swimming pools in France in 2020, with more people working from home during the Covid-19 pandemic and a further surge in swimming pool installations. The software used by the French tax authorities was developed by Google and the consulting firm Capgemini. In addition to finding undeclared swimming pools, the tax department plans to use it to find undeclared house extensions, patios or gazebos that raise property taxes.
