Free open access policy for Science journal articles to take effect in 2023

Science publishers will allow authors of their research papers to publish near-final versions of their manuscripts in a repository of their choice immediately after publication, at no cost. Bill Moran, publisher of Science at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), said the policy will go into effect in January 2023 and will apply to five subscription journals in the Science family. Currently, most authors of papers in the Science series are only permitted to publish their Science publications in institutional repositories or personal websites. They must wait 6 months after publication before adding papers to other repositories. In August, the U.S. government released an updated policy on open access to papers, requiring state-funded research to be made freely available to the public immediately after publication, with implementation in place by the end of 2025.
