Global wheat production to drop significantly, satellite data suggests

Satellite data analysis shows a significant decline in global wheat production . Weather factors such as drought and high temperatures will reduce the EU wheat harvest by 4.7 million tonnes from last year, bad news for countries looking to replace Ukrainian wheat. Three of the world’s top five wheat producers — the United States, France and Ukraine — will produce lower-than-expected production, the analysis showed. The U.S. is the world’s third-largest wheat exporter, but Kansas and Oklahoma, two major wheat-producing states, suffered severe drought this spring, with production expected to be 7-8 percent below average. India is also a major producer of wheat, but India suffered an extreme heat wave during a critical period for wheat growth. India subsequently announced a ban on wheat exports, and its output is expected to be reduced by 10 million tons. Wheat production in Canada and Russia is expected to be better than last year, but not enough to offset lower wheat crops elsewhere.
