Thanks to Apple’s excellent Find My network, users can track down any lost or stolen iPhone, iPad, Mac or AirTag, even if they’re out of Wi-Fi or Bluetooth range and powered off.

In 2021, Google was spotted working on a similar Find My Device network, but there hasn’t been much new news on that front since. However, the Play system changelog updated in December 2022 hints at the imminent arrival of a “Find My Device” network that can track lost or stolen Android devices even without an Internet connection.

In the December 2022 revision of the Google Play system changelog, Google noted that Find My Device uses a new “privacy-focused framework” and supports sending encrypted last known location reports. This could hint at a Find My Device network rolling out to all Android devices soon, enabling them to act as beacons for lost devices.

The original December Play system update introduced support for adding a driver’s license to Google Wallet in select US states. The new release notes highlight other features being rolled out to Android phones, including automatic app archiving and digital car key support on Xiaomi phones.

The app archiving feature announced in March 2022 allows users to uninstall an app from their phone to free up space, but the app data is kept locally. When the app is reinstalled, the user will have the same experience as before archiving. The app archive started rolling out with Google Play Store v33.4 in late November. Now, Google is taking this a step further by automatically archiving apps when your phone runs low on storage. App Archive, which automatically handles low storage space in the background without hindering the user experience, was introduced as part of Google Play Store v33.5.

The latest Google Play Services also enables digital car key support on Xiaomi phones, a feature previously limited to some Samsung and Pixel phones. Additionally, Fitbit Sense 2 and Versa 2 owners can now use the Google Wallet app to manage payment cards connected to their wearables.

IT Home understands that all the above improvements are part of the update of Google Play Services v50.22 and Google Play Store v33.5, the former was released on December 15th, while the latest Play Store version was released on December 12th. Start rolling out.
