Google to lay off 12,000 jobs

Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced plans to cut 12,000 jobs on their official blogs. Google has sent emails to affected U.S. employees, but it is expected to take longer in other countries due to local laws and regulations. 12,000 people accounted for 6% of the total number of employees, which is Google’s largest layoff so far. Similar to Microsoft’s layoff statement, Pichai also talked about Google’s emphasis on AI. The layoffs will involve many departments of Google/Alphabet, and some non-core projects will face a more serious impact.
