Google recently updated its Google account inactivity policy. According to the new policy, the upper limit of Google account idle period in all Google products and services is adjusted to 2 years, and the adjustment will take effect immediately. Google said it will delete inactive accounts and all content on them starting December 1, 2023.

Google stated that if the user has multiple Google accounts set up on the device, it is necessary to ensure that the frequency of use of each account is no less than once every two years.

Google emphasizes that before performing the deletion operation, Google will send an email notification to the user’s Google account, and will also send a notification to their recovery email address (if any).

The following is the full text of Google’s notification email:

To keep you safe and protect your private information, Google has always used built-in security mechanisms to prevent unauthorized access to your Google Account. Keeping you safe means that all Google products adhere to strict privacy practices and store your personal files and all related data for as little time as possible. Even if you no longer use Google services, Google works hard to protect your private information and prevent unauthorized access to your account.

As a result, we’ve adjusted the maximum Google Account inactivity period across all Google products and services to 2 years. This change goes into effect today and applies to all Google Accounts that are inactive (not signed in or used for 2 consecutive years). Beginning December 1, 2023, Google will delete inactive accounts and all content within them.

How this affects you:

  • These changes will have no effect on you unless your Google Account has been inactive for 2 consecutive years or is not used to sign in to any Google services.
  • While the above changes take effect today, Google won’t start enforcing account deletions until December 2023 at the earliest.
  • If your account is considered inactive, Google will send several email reminders to your current email address and recovery email address (if provided) at least 8 months in advance before any action is taken or any content on this account is deleted.
  • Once a Google Account is deleted, its corresponding Gmail address can no longer be used to create a new Google Account.

How to keep your account active?

The easiest way to keep your Google Account active is to make sure you haven’t logged in to your account for more than 2 years. If you’ve signed in to your Google Account within the past 2 years, it’s considered active and won’t be deleted.

Other ways to keep your account active include:

  • view or email
  • Use Google Drive
  • watch youtube video
  • Share photo
  • download app
  • Google search
  • Sign in to third-party apps or services with “Sign in with Google”

There are some exceptions to this policy. Examples include: a Google Account with a YouTube channel, videos, or reviews; an account with a gift card with credit in it; or an account with a published app (for example, an account that hosts an app in the Google Play Store). You can view other exceptions to this policy by clicking here.

Google also provides several tools to help you manage your Google Account and back up your data with a variety of options, including using Google Takeout to download data and Inactive Account Manager to plan what should happen to your data if your account is inactive for a period of time.

Google’s priority is to make it as easy as possible for you to keep your account active (if you choose to do so), and we will notify you by appropriate means before this change affects any of your accounts. To this end, before deleting a Google Account, Google will send separate email notifications to the account and its recovery email address (if provided). Be sure to keep your recovery email address up to date.
