Goolge started laying off 12,000 employees on Friday, accounting for 6% of the total workforce. The first to be affected were US employees. According to current information, at least 12% of the 400-person Fuchsia operating system development team has been laid off, because only American employees have received layoff notices at this stage, and ultimately the number of people affected may be even greater. Fuchsia OS is an experimental operating system developed by Google that uses a microkernel called Zircon. The new operating system has sparked a lot of speculation and was supposed to replace Android and Chrome OS, so far it’s mostly been used on Nest Hub devices. Area 120, Google’s internal research and development department, was reduced to only three core projects, and basically all employees in other projects were laid off. Area 120 experienced a large-scale layoff in September last year. The layoffs will focus Area 120’s research on AI-first projects.
