Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: A Decent Farewell

I watched “Guardians of the Galaxy 3” for the first time on the day it was officially released. The reason why I didn’t choose the zero point scene was because I didn’t have a car or a driver’s license, so I didn’t go to the cinema to catch up with this trend.

There are almost no people in the cinema, which is hard to imagine before the epidemic. After all, this is a Marvel superhero movie, and it is not difficult to maintain an attendance rate of around 30% even in the daytime show. However, there were only 7 people in the entire screening hall, and the number of people was 2 more than the last time I watched “The Movie”. So it proves that Marvel is still more appealing than Japanese comics?

According to the trailer released earlier, many people speculated that Rocket Raccoon will die in this movie. I was very angry at this interpretation at the time, why did you kill the animal character again? The last time I did this was in the “Harry Potter” movie, what did Hedwig do wrong to be killed? Fortunately, it turned out that this interpretation was a misinterpretation.

“Guardians of the Galaxy 3” is a group portrait movie, but Rocket Raccoon is a key character in the series. After all, a group portrait movie also needs a main plot, and Rocket Raccoon is obviously suitable for this role. Because according to the current movie setting, Rocket Raccoon is the captain of the next generation of “Guardians of the Galaxy”. The current captain Star-Lord already has a complete character background, so it is natural to complete the character background of Rocket Raccoon.

“Guardians of the Galaxy 3” is not only the last “Guardians of the Galaxy” series directed by James Gunn, but also his last work to bid farewell to the MCU Marvel Cinematic Universe. Therefore, “farewell” has become the emotional tone of “Guardians of the Galaxy 3”.

“Farewell” can be regarded as an eternal motif of the film, and this is not a motif that is easy to explain. From the basic emotional needs of human beings, we are repelled by “goodbye”. Once the four words “life and death” are mentioned, most people will present unpleasant memories in their hearts. And to make people empathize with such a movie without loathing it, the director and screenwriter need to find a way to find a balance between “sensation” and “restraint”. And from a commercial point of view, “Farewell” is not a theme that producers like. Once the theme of “farewell” appears in a series of movies, it means that this series of movies is cut off from the current audience. Because this is tantamount to clearly telling the audience that our fate is over, and we will target new audiences in the next movie. So when “Avengers 4”, the sacrifice of Black Widow and Iron Man, the aging of Captain America, Thor’s farewell to the earth, etc., were presented at the end one by one, many first-generation MCU audiences realized a problem-“My youth it’s over”.

Wanting to make a good “farewell” movie is not something that a purely commercial director can do well. In the MCU series of movies, “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and “Black Widow” are considered two “farewell” movies. One of the keynotes of the story of “Spider-Man: Far From Home” is the farewell to “Iron Man”, but the problem is that this movie does not exude that flavor at all, but instead makes Iron Man a stepping stone to set off Spider-Man’s growth. If it is understandable that the protagonist of “Spider-Man: Far From Home” needs Iron Man to make sacrifices because he is Spider-Man, but “Black Widow” is obviously a movie to bid farewell to Natasha, but it is so horrible to make it like that People are disgusted by Mickey Mouse’s “eating appearance”.

Fortunately, James Gunn is not the kind of director that Mickey Mouse likes. At the same time, because Director Gunn now holds the control of the new DC movie universe and doesn’t have to worry about running out of food, Mickey Mouse is very interested in “Galaxy”. The controls in Guardians 3 don’t seem to be that great. I also want to add here, as the quality controller of the early MCU series of movies, has Kevin Feige been emptied or his taste has declined?

As the current captain of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Star-Lord resigns as captain at the end of the movie. Not only did he reconcile with his life experience and return to Earth to live with his grandfather; at the same time, he also reconciled with Gamora, and he no longer entangled his love with Gamora.

The love treatment of Gamora and Star-Lord in “Guardians of the Galaxy 3” is a classic. The Gamora who loved Star-Lord has died, and this Gamora who has traveled over has not had time and is not interested in continuing to love Star-Lord. For Xingjue, whether his lover will leave is a difficult problem; but for Gamora, although I am me, I am not me, why should I inherit everything about me? Fortunately, they are still friends and colleagues in the end, meeting each other with a smile to wipe away all grievances. Star-Lord returned to Earth to find his family, and Gamora returned to the big family of Predators. We’re Family!

The story of Rocket Raccoon is the main line of “Guardians of the Galaxy 3”, and its growth is also a tragedy. In fact, when I saw the beginning, I guessed that Lila, Da Ya and Ban Ban must have a bad ending, but I didn’t expect Director Gu En to “kill a lot” here. The reason why Rocket Raccoon is unwilling to recall the past or admit his identity as a raccoon is nothing more than escaping from his own past. He refuses to cause the death of his friends because of himself. He longs for friendship, but fears it.

The opening song of “Guardians of the Galaxy 3” chose Radiohead’s “Creep”. At the time, I was surprised why such a vulgar love song was chosen as the opening song, but when I finally saw Banban shouting “Rocket, Run!”, I understood.

I admit that “Guardians of the Galaxy 3” is essentially a very commercial movie. “Rescue Zero” for Rocket Raccoon, for example, was too much of a Hollywood twist, but I was quietly moved to tears. Also, the Guardians of the Galaxy collectively posing and walking in the final battle are too mentally retarded, but you have to admit that this shot is very hot! And the long-shot fight scene that follows is very rare in the MCU series of movies. This long shot is really amazing! Among them, director Gu En can see many of his bad tastes when dealing with fights, such as poking assholes, chopping dicks, poking deep throats, etc. Anyway, it is already politically incorrect to choose a black man as the villain in this movie, so why bother to pursue “family carnival” so deliberately?

Rocket finally reconciles with his past when he finally admits that he is “a raccoon.” He also has friends and teammates, and he has become a responsible adult.

The three supporting characters, Drax, Nebula, and Mantis, also got their endings, and director Gunn didn’t forget them, and he gave everyone a decent farewell.

Drax, who had lost his wife and daughter, became a father again, this time with many, many daughters. Nebula, who was once abused to the point of forgetting her humanity, has recovered herself and found her goal. She wants to lead everyone to live a happy life; Mantis Girl is no longer the meek character without any personality. She has finally become a A three-dimensional character.

Everyone lived happily ever after…

It’s Hollywood, but we’re all satisfied, aren’t we?
