Google’s security team, Threat Analysis Group (TAG), disclosed that a state-backed hacker group used five 0-days to install Cytrox’s spyware, Predator, on Android devices. The attacks came from at least three different groups and took place between August and October 2021, and the attackers used five zero-days of Chrome and Android OS to implant Predator on Android devices with the latest patches installed. The attackers came from Egypt, Armenia, Greece, Madagascar, Côte d’Ivoire, Serbia, Spain and Indonesia. The finding is in line with Citizen Lab’s December report on Cytrox spyware, when researchers found a malicious program on the phone of exiled Egyptian politician Ayman Nour. Nour’s phone was also found to be infected with NSO Group’s spyware Pegasus.
