High water temperatures affect French nuclear power generation

Nuclear power supplies 70 percent of France’s electricity needs, but more than half of its 56 nuclear reactors are shut down due to maintenance and age-related corrosion problems. Today’s extreme heat has the potential to further impact its power generation . Climate usually has little effect on nuclear power, but this year’s heat was different, with reactors using river water for cooling, but power generation from the reactors being limited to prevent the cooled hot water from endangering wildlife. State-owned EDF estimates that it could lose as much as 18.5 billion euros in revenue in 2022 due to reduced power generation.
