Today we present one of Edward Hopper’s most famous paintings. The stunning artist paints cityscapes, views and building interiors in his iconic, cinematic scenes – all with sparse figures or no figures at all. Although he insists that his paintings are direct representations of the real world, they are often imbued with an unmistakable sense of loneliness, alienation, stillness, and mystery. Light, whether natural or artificial, plays a central role in fantasy. The evening light hangs over Hopper’s House by the railway, a grand Victorian home whose foundations and floors are shaded by the railway’s tracks. These tracks create a visual barrier that seems to prevent people from entering the house, as if it were a landscape isolated in the air. In early 20th-century America, the juxtaposition of house and railroad might be read as a traditional confrontation between fixedness and mobility. At the same time, these effects evoke the quiet and energetic atmosphere that has become a hallmark of the artist’s work.
Side note: Several of Hopper’s paintings served as inspiration for movie scenes, including this one shown today. Check out other masterpieces recreated in the movie!
