I am a user of Tesla Model 3. Personally, I think Tesla’s navigation and entertainment systems in mainland China are really not easy to use. Of course, it may also have something to do with my daily liking to use AutoNavi and Spotify to listen to songs. I believe that many Tesla users, like me, very much hope to use Apple’s CarPlay, but Tesla’s car system is actually Linux and very closed, and there is no possibility of a shortcut to crack and install software. .
However, Polish developer Michał Gapiński gave a solution using the Raspberry Pi some time ago to use CarPlay on Tesla. Because the two Raspberry Pi development boards that have been needed before have been simplified to one and it has become a lot simpler and more stable, I will also make a tutorial to share with you.
Preparation
It needs to be said that the current price of Raspberry Pi 4B is still relatively high, and the whole process is a little troublesome. The fun of tossing is greater than the actual use. friends try.
In order to achieve the effect of using CarPlay on a Tesla, you need to prepare:
- Raspberry Pi 4B development board (includes SD card and card reader)
- HDMI to CSI-2 Adapter Board
- Micro HDMI to HDMI cable
- Chelianyi’s CarPlay Box
- USB Type-C data cable (for flashing and connecting car power supply)
- A computer (for installing the system Win Mac to the Raspberry Pi)
- Download the system (version: 2022.38.1)
Of course, some are optional: such as the casing and cooling fan of the Raspberry Pi, it is recommended to choose a plastic casing, because the metal one may block the Wi-Fi signal of the Raspberry Pi; if you want to connect the Tesla to the Raspberry Pi’s If you can still use the network when Wi-Fi, you need to buy another USB 4G Modern. Tesla is offline when connected to Wi-Fi without Internet connection.
Installation tutorial
Write Android to SD card
Open the downloaded etcher tool , select the deploy-sd.img file in the unzipped folder, and then select the SD card of the Raspberry Pi to write to.
Install Android for Raspberry Pi
After inserting the SD card into the Raspberry Pi, connect the computer with a USB Type-C data cable, please make sure that the adb tool is installed on the computer. Users may also need to install additional USB drivers .
Then open the path of the downloaded unzipped folder in the terminal and execute the following command:
fastboot flash gpt deploy-gpt.img fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-sd.img fastboot flash uboot-env env.img fastboot reboot
Wait for the restart to complete, and continue to execute:

The terminal execution is completed as shown in the figure above. The last step may take a few minutes, and the first startup of the Raspberry Pi Android system will also take an additional few minutes. Please wait patiently. Finally, if you can find the Tesla-Android Wi-Fi hotspot, the startup is complete. The default Wi-Fi password is: changeit.
Assembling the CarPlay system
Connect the Display cable port of the Raspberry Pi to the HDMI to CSI-2 adapter board, and then use the Mirco HDMI cable to connect the HDMI interface and the adapter version of the Raspberry Pi, and the CarPlay box of CarLink is connected to the Raspberry Pi USB The port can be used, and finally it can be used through USB Type-C power supply.
We can connect the computer to Tesla-Android Wi-Fi, and use the browser to enter 9.9.0.1. If the above steps are completed correctly, the page will display the Android 12 operating system installed on the Raspberry Pi.
how to use
The installed and debugged CarPlay system can be put into Tesla’s armrest box and used the charging interface here. Tesla needs to be connected to Tesla-Android Wi-Fi and check “Always connect while driving” to be able to use it normally while driving. Use Tesla browser to open 9.9.0.1 to enter the Android system interface of Raspberry Pi, and start CarPlay by opening the App with AutoKit installed by default.
It should be noted that AutoKit’s audio needs to be set to Bluetooth mode, which allows the phone to connect directly to the Tesla to play audio.

As you can see, this way of making Tesla use CarPlay seems too “geeky”. The principle is to run the Android system in the Raspberry Pi and output the video to the Camera interface, and finally realize real-time through web streaming show.
The experience of using this method is not very ideal. First, the position of the Tesla browser is fixed in the lower right corner and cannot be displayed in full screen; second, the quality of the streaming screen will change with the fluctuation of the Wi-Fi signal; finally , the smoothness of running Android on the Raspberry Pi is not good, and the price of the Raspberry Pi 4B single board has now risen to more than 700 yuan, and the construction cost of the entire system is not low. At present, this solution is still in the stage of “seeing a piece of music”, and we should still hope that Tesla’s car system will become more open and user-friendly.
