The old denizens never complain about the poor environment because they are the ones who caused it. Hahaha. Just kidding.HN上Saw one.How to give a senior leader feedback without getting firedHow to give feedback to a senior manager without losing your job and find it useful. After so many years of working part-time, I’ve found communication and influence to be all too real. A few excerpts:
1. More, better, better, not diodes
🚫 “New hire training is lacking” – Old Den: “You know the end? You’re the only one who can train? Get out.”
✅ “We may need to provide more orientation for new hires” — “Indeed the existing training is insufficient and needs to be strengthened”
The binary accusation implies that either there is training or there isn’t, implying that this is a threat to Olden’s leadership position.
2. Use yourself as an example
🚫 “You should try X technique.”
✅ “I used to struggle with this and when I tried X it really helped.”
3. Diplomatic language
- We might want to try ……
- I wonder if ……
- Maybe we can ……
- What do you think ……
- One way might be ……
4. Comparison of data support
🚫 “Please give us more guidance on this project”
✅ “We’ve found that when we review a round of design drafts with our clients on a weekly basis, they tend to be happier with it all in the end; and for this project right now, if we can confirm a few more things early on, it can help us to make sure that we are aligned with our goals and prevent rework as we progress deeper in a certain direction.”
🚫 “Teams need to prioritize more clearly”
✅ “The team made drastic progress last month when we were all focused on updating the website; if this month, set one or two clear priorities for the team, this will allow everyone to be more focused”
🚫 “We should spend more time training new employees”
✅ “I remember Steve’s first week here, it was all about putting in the training and he got up to speed very quickly. A little upfront time investment looks to have paid off nicely with a similar training approach for our next employee to help them improve just as quickly. What do you think?
The authors recommend three principles:
- Conclude with clear, actionable recommendations
- Demonstrate the benefits of the update methodology
- Keep it simple, logical and positive
It is recommended that those who are familiar with the English language should read the original article. The author also has aHow to give subordinates a lectureI think it’s pretty well written too.
It’s amazing what you find when flipping through HN, which probably means that if you find that you need flowery language (fluff up) to be listened to, then the top level already sucks and you’d better start touching up your resume 。。。。。 Right. The author’s piece is titled How to Give Feedback Without Losing Your Job. Both are true. People and people’s trust in front of the interests are very fragile: low position is worried about their own, because there is a high probability that because of bullshit reasons will somehow lose their jobs; high position is the most afraid of losing face, for fear of losing to seniority did not have their own old, rank than their own low. Highly effective communication is difficult. Most of the comments are:It’s not worth giving advice to the boss
- Misalignment of power and energy
- Excessive confrontation risk
- damage relationship
- It’s not working.
- 误会
- Sabotage of reporting relationships
- “Openness” is just a slogan. It’s just words.
