How to tell a moving story

do you know? It’s not the stories that move people, it’s the storytellers.

So what does the storyteller need to do to tell a story that fascinates, surprises, and fascinates the audience? Many people have wondered and have been exploring, including me and Julian Shapiro .

When Julian set out to do a podcast, he spent 30 days researching Neil deGrasse Tyson , a super-savvy storyteller, and came up with these tips:

  • All stories should be written in advance
  • Write it well but don’t recite it, the audience wants an authentic expression
  • Keeping a piece of information until the end is an art
  • Enough foreshadowing to arouse readers’ curiosity about the answer
  • Stories need heroes and villains, but they don’t have to be humans
  • Translate your own experience into that of your audience, eliciting empathy

Well, it looks like Julian already knows how to put together a good story, so he got his buddies and tried to record a show and used all these tricks, what happened? The story is well-crafted, but it doesn’t sound engaging, and he feels like an amateur, like a robot.

The story is right, this time it should be a matter of expression (right?).

So Julian turned to YouTube to find answers, and it was perfect to learn presentation skills through videos. After watching some of the master’s videos, Julian understood that storytelling should be like playing music:

  • change your speed
  • change your volume
  • Change your passion and energy
  • Use staccato and rhythm
  • Most importantly, know how to pause

ok, the story is there, the skills are there, and it will be possible to find a friend to record it again.

But the thing that disappointed him happened again, and it still didn’t feel right. The recording sounded lifeless, still mediocre. Despite spending countless hours over the years, Julian still couldn’t tell a story that satisfied him. He didn’t give up and went back to YouTube again to learn from great people.

After a week, he found a man named Jason Silva, and from Jason’s videos, he found the charm and attraction that he had been dreaming of. Like this video .

How did Jason do it? Because he felt incredible for his own story. While telling the story, he was moved by himself and released his real emotions.

This time, Julian finally found his answer, and the first issue of ” Brains ” was finally recorded and released with Jason Silva and another master storyteller, Tim Urban, as guests.

At the end of the show, Julian asked Jason to verify his point of view, whether he really had this idea that moved him, “Did you really do this? I think this is the answer that I have been confused about for many years.”

Jason said yes. He said he never pressed the video button until he found the emotion of the story.

The story is over, this is the first blog I have written since I was quarantined at home for two months. reason? It hit me and I got goosebumps on the back of my neck when I hit the last sentence, I think I’m telling you this story with the same emotion as Jason.

What can move people is not the story, not the technique, but yourself who is being moved by the story.
