How would you rate Warhammer: Chronicles of the Horus Heresy by Alan Murrett?

Visions of Heresy (published in China and translated as “The Chronicle of the Horus Rebellion”) is a collection of paintings and stories briefly describing the history of the Horus Rebellion. Over the past twenty years, as the story of the Horus Rebellion has been enriched and new art illustrations have been added, this book has also been revised many times, which is quite different from the original version.

When the first edition of Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader was first launched, although there were space warriors and emperors in this story, there were no core concepts of Warhammer 40K, such as Primarch, Great Crusade, Horus Rebellion, Chaos, etc. More like a shoddy space hunk B-movie. It was not until the Book of the Astronomican (Book of the Astronomican), published the following year (1988), that the name Horus appeared for the first time in a block of tofu in the book.

The Heresy of Horus is considered by many to be the single greatest catastrophe to ever befall the Imperium. The exact details of this Great Rebellion are known only to the Emperor himself, but the broad outlines of this history have evolved into the stuff of popular legend. According to one version of the legend, Horus was once the most trusted servant of the Emperor. But there was a hidden demon living in his heart, and he was gradually seduced by this demon, and began to cultivate demons and other world-destroying forces. Horus marched on Earth with a third of the Imperial army seduced by his goal. The armies fought for seven days and seven nights until the Emperor finally captured Horus and threw him into the Eye of Terror along with a third of his Imperial forces.

Later that same year, Games Workshop published the wargame Order of Titans and the setting book Chaos Realms: Servants of Darkness. Both of these expand on the history and background information of the Horus Heresy. Since then, the story has been enriched and expanded. In the end, it shaped the Warhammer 40,000 universe we know today, woven of fate, sacrifice, ambition and loyalty.

In 2004, GW collected the pictures associated with the “Horus Rebellion” card game, and wrote the text by Alan Merrett, making this set describing the entire history of the Horus Rebellion, And it was originally published in four separate volumes.

These four Visions books have been consolidated into one Horus Heresy Collected Visions. Later, it was renamed Visions of Heresy, and it was revised and published twice in 2013 and 2018 (due to the death of the original author, the 2018 revision was in charge of Harley Guy), each time incorporating new stories created by GW and Black Library Lines and added illustrations.

In 2018, I was entrusted by Mr. Lu Ming from Zhejiang Science and Technology Press to translate a draft based on the 2013 edition of Visions of Heresy. However, shortly after I submitted the manuscript, the Black Library released a new revised version. I had to re-translate it again, and it took a long time.

Warhammer’s novels and rulebooks are numerous, but as stated in the preface to the 2018 edition of Visions of Heresy, this book is the most authoritative and comprehensive version of the Horus Heresy story to date. Therefore, if you are interested in the story of Warhammer 30K, but do not know much about it, this “Horus Rebellion Chronicle” can be used as the best primer for you to understand this world view and story.
