IBM announced the 433-qubit Osprey chip, more than triple last year’s 127-qubit Eagle chip. Big Blue also plans to launch a system with more than 4,000 qubits by 2025. IBM is continuing to invest in quantum computers, and its roadmap for the next three years includes a 1,121-qubit Condor chip in 2023, a 1,386-qubit Flamingo chip in 2024, and a Kookaburra chip that will increase the number of qubits to more than 4,000 in 2025 . Increasing the number of qubits is challenging, but for a quantum computer to be practical it will also require extended coherence times and reduced noise. IBM on Wednesday also announced a quantum host that houses multiple quantum processors.
