I’m obviously swiping my phone, why sometimes I feel like I’ve gained something, and sometimes I feel like it’s a waste of time?
In my opinion, this is the difference between deep and shallow. Deep refers to the depth of the content level, in-depth reading, understanding and experience around a fixed theme, the information and emotions obtained are logically coherent and full of details. Shallow also refers to the shallowness of the content level. It hastily crossed a timeline composed of information with no beginning and no end. It seems that a lot of information has been obtained, but it is unknown that it is a lot of low-quality, repetitive or even worthless information. The shallow here of course also includes the passivity of behavior. Attention is firmly captured by the designed timeline, blindly pursuing a sense of integrity, for fear of missing some information that is actually worthless (ie FOMO: Fear of Missing Out).
In-depth experience includes but is not limited to:
- read a book
- watch a movie
- play a play
- Have a deep conversation with friends
Shallow experience includes but is not limited to:
- Browse social networks
- Browse social news
- Brush short video
Deep experience requires effort to obtain, allowing people to gain complex emotional experience and give people progress. Shallow experiences can be obtained without effort and are easily entertaining, but long-term numbness and loss of free will. Time is fair to everyone. Spending more time on shallow experience will inevitably reduce the time spent on deep experience. Facing the temptation of shallow experience, we must learn how to allocate our time and jump out of the trap of shallow experience.
