India is planning to tax the money players win in online games. India’s finance ministry in May proposed a 28 percent excise tax on revenue from online games, regardless of whether the games are based on player skill or luck. For this proposal, industry experts pointed out that the 28% consumption tax plus the 30% income tax means that the total tax rate of the online game industry will be as high as 50%, which may mean “game over” for this emerging industry. Indian tax officials are reviewing 5.8 trillion rupees ($7.2 billion) in revenue earned by players on a gaming platform over the past three years.
