India is one of the countries worst affected by antibiotic-resistant superbugs . Nearly 60,000 newborns die each year from infection with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. A new report from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in India says resistance to carbapenem antibiotics is increasing by 10% a year. Carbapenems are powerful antibiotics used to treat life-threatening sepsis and are often used as first-line therapy for critically ill patients in the ICU. Antibiotic resistance caused 1.27 million deaths in 2019, according to The Lancet.
