India lifted 415 million people out of poverty in the 15 years from 2005-06 to 2019-21, according to a report released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Monday. India’s poverty rate fell from 55.1% in 2005-06 to 16.4% in 2019-21. Of the 415 million people lifted out of poverty, 275 million were lifted out of poverty between 2005-06 and 2015-16, and 140 million were lifted out of poverty between 2015-16 and 2019-21, the report said. The poverty rate in rural areas fell from 36.6% to 21.2% between 2015-16 and 2019-21, and the urban poverty rate fell from 9.0% to 5.5%. India still has 4.2% of its population living in abject poverty.
