India announced last month that it will adopt USB-C as a universal charging port for smart devices. A universal charger would eliminate the need for a different charger when purchasing a new device, significantly reducing e-waste. India will generate about 5 million tons of e-waste in 2021, second only to China and the United States. Now, India has announced a deadline for smartphones to use USB-C – by March 2025, smartphones and other mobile devices sold in India must have a USB-C charging port. This time is three months later than in Europe – the EU requires that smartphones sold locally must be equipped with USB-C by the end of 2024. Indian officials said there was a broad consensus among the industry and the government that USB-C could be made mandatory six months after the European Union rolled out its standard because of an integrated global supply chain.
