India wants the government to judge the authenticity of information

India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has proposed in an amendment to its national IT policy that the Information Bureau of India and other government agencies be the arbiters of truth about whether user information is misleading. In the draft amendments, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology requires social media companies and online game companies to conduct rigorous investigations on user-posted content to ensure that it is not manifestly false, false or misleading. It proposes that social media companies and online game companies use the judgment of the Information Bureau or other agencies authorized by the central government to conduct fact-checking. But fact-checking by the Information Bureau of India has been found to be misleading in some cases.
