I have maintained my weight so far. One important reason is that I am more particular about what I eat. Don’t eat randomly, don’t eat everything, let alone eat hard. No matter how delicious things are, when I eat almost enough, I stop. Both quality and quantity are well controlled, and weight control also has a basic set. In fact, how can you eat all the delicacies in the world? I even believe that many of our health problems are not caused by malnutrition or lack of food. On the contrary, we eat too much and take in too much food.
There is one thing I don’t do very well compared to food intake. Driven by curiosity, I have been paying attention to some cutting-edge information since I was a child, especially since I came into contact with the Internet more than 20 years ago, I have been paying attention to various information almost every day. In the process, I did capture some interesting and useful information, and benefited from it. Whether in terms of quality or quantity, it should be far superior to ordinary people. Probably my cognition has been built up little by little, which is a good side.
However, in terms of exploring the unknown, the signal-to-noise ratio of the information I come into contact with is too low compared to the noise, and the ratio between useful information and noise is too small. This wasted a lot of my time and energy. It even affected my health to a certain extent.
When I was in elementary school, I saw hanging on the walls of the simple classrooms: There are roads in the mountains of books, and hard work is the path, and the sea of learning is boundless and hard work. As long as there is a boat, the boundless sea of learning can reach the other side… Later, during the doctoral and postdoctoral period, I found that even if I did research, I could only delve into one thing from a very small angle. There is a joke saying that studying marriage abroad The doctor actually doesn’t know how to divorce. That’s probably what it means.
Later, when I read Lao Zhuang, the old man said: My life has a limit, and knowledge has no limit. The finite life pursues the infinite knowledge, tossing around. When I was young, I felt that Lao Zhuang’s thoughts of lying down were a bit negative. Now that I think about it, isn’t that the case?
In terms of information intake, I don’t need to spend too much time and energy to absorb a lot of information, most of which are garbage information and noise. Today’s information dissemination is developed, even in China, there are various social media, instant messaging APP, text, audio, video, long video and short video, everything that one expects to find. With the blessing of algorithms, the content of information will never be exhausted.
One day, I was reading a textbook for children. In terms of moral education, a word was mentioned in the book: information dieting. Searching for keywords, I found that a foreign author wrote a book “Information Dieting” 9 years ago. After reading the general introduction, my eyes light up. Just like dieting, in terms of information intake, don’t you also need to go on a diet? How can we obtain all kinds of information and ingest it endlessly?
It’s the same as reading. Although we say that we read thousands of books, there are so many publications nowadays that it is impossible to spend all of our limited time on reading. Moreover, there are not many books that are really worth reading, and it is already very beneficial to read some of the classic works.
I still believe that curiosity cannot be lost, but now I realize that there is no need to spend too much time and energy paying attention to the massive fragmented information. We should be more restrained in the source and quantity of information, and achieve an information diet, so that useful information can still be obtained—even if it is a little later, and there is still time and energy for deep thinking, creation, and turning useful information into action. More importantly, this can maintain the balance between work, life and health.
People don’t understand these truths until they are middle-aged. I hope it is not too late.
