Intel NUC9 Black Apple and Sonoma Installation Tutorial

Unknowingly, Xiaobing has been in contact with Black Apple for nearly ten years, thanks to the fans of Black Fruit; 2023 may be a year of alternatingand, Black Apple has slowly entered the twilight, and Apple has gradually Stop full support for Intel architecture, macOS may only support arm platform for a period of time in the future.

Preparations before installation

It is already 2023, and the new Sonoma is about to be released. Both the hardware and macOS system itself have undergone earth-shaking changes.

Hardware preparation:

Before using macOS , you need to understand the limitations of the hardware, that is, which hardware is supported and which is not.

At present, all hardware of Intel NUC9 is compatible with macOS

Computer Configuration

Specification details
Computer Model Intel NUC9
operating system macOS Sonoma / Ventura / Monterey
processor Intel i5-9300/i9-9980HK
Memory 64GB DDR4 2666-3200MHz
HDD 1/2/3 Supports up to three m.2 NVMe
graphics card Intel UHD 630
display port Thunderbolt 3 x2 + HDMI 2.0a x1(4K@60Hz)
sound card USB Audio Device
Wireless network card m.2 NGFF slot, the factory default is Intel® Wi-Fi 6 AX200
wired network card Intel® Ethernet Connection i219-LM / i210-AT
card reader SDXC

SSD

In most cases, all SATA-based drives are supported, as are most NVMe drives. There are only a few exceptions:

  • Samsung PM981(a) / PM991 and Micron 2200S NVMe SSD
    • These SSDs are not compatible (causing kernel panics ), so NVMeFix.kext is required to fix these kernel panics . Note that even with NVMeFix.kext , these drives may still cause boot issues.
    • On a related note, the Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe SSD had the same problem, but it was fixed in a firmware update. Firmware updates are available here (via Samsung Magician or Windows as a bootable ISO).
    • Note also that macOS does not support laptops using Intel Optane Memory or Micron 3D XPoint for HDD acceleration. Some users have reported success with Catalina, even with read and write support, but we strongly recommend that you remove the drive to prevent any potential boot issues.

Wireless network card

Supported m.2 NGFF wireless network cards:

  • Broadcom:

    Due to the limited space, the models that can be used include: BCM94360Z3 / DW1820A / DW1560 / BCM94352Z / BCM94360Z4 . Due to the space of the network card, it does not support ginkgo disassembly card, etc.;

Since the support for Broadcom wireless network card is temporarily removed from Sonoma , please use Intel wireless network card or wired network card for the time being.

  • Intel:

Thanks to the @zxystd team for developing OpenIntelWireless
