Today is Sunday and let’s continue our month of collaboration with the collections of the Statens Museum for Kunst . I love Hammershøi, so I’m excited to share his work with you today!

Many of Hamershöy’s works show the interiors of his home. Over the years, he has used his ever-changing home as a studio and the subject of his work. He didn’t just pick an apartment at random. In an interview with the magazine Hjemmet in 1909, Hammershui said: “I personally prefer a sense of time; old buildings, old furniture, these things have a unique atmosphere.” Those who were selected The house is to provide a sensual space for his paintings. The room constitutes the main scene, in which the characters interact with their surroundings, as if joining a close-up interior drama. Hammershui is involved in international movements that use traditional themes, such as interior design, to study painting spaces. Rather than narrative, the artists emphasized imagery like light, air, and water, and their focus was on how to apply paint to the canvas. During this period, many artists were interested in photography, using it as an entry point for painting. The photography in Hamershöy’s exhibit includes photographs of Copenhagen’s streets and backyards, closely linked to his paintings. Hamershöy is not only depicting indoors; he also depicts many buildings and places in the city outdoors. He carefully picks out these outdoor locations and observes them frequently through the signature hazy mist.

Let’s take it easy and dive into the quiet life of Vilhelm Hammershøi’s interior paintings. <3

Side note: We love the early masters as much as Hammershee. If you are too, don’t miss out on our daily art prints , full of classic art masterpieces.
