The 6-day UN International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite System (ICG) 16th General Assembly concluded on the 14th in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

Yang Changfeng, chief designer of China’s Beidou satellite navigation system engineering, said in an exclusive interview with a reporter from Xinhua News Agency during the conference that the Beidou-3 global satellite navigation system has been in service for more than two years, and its stability and high precision have been fully verified. The application prospect of Beidou system is very broad, “the application of Beidou is only limited by imagination”.

Yang Changfeng said that after more than two years of application and actual measurement, the Beidou-3 system has a global positioning accuracy of 4 to 5 meters, and the accuracy is better in the Asia-Pacific region. At present, the Beidou system has been widely used in many fields such as land surveying and mapping, digital construction, precision agriculture, etc., and its application in the fields of unmanned driving and smart city construction is steadily advancing.

Yang Changfeng pointed out that after the Beidou-3 system was launched, the short message communication service capacity of the Beidou system’s characteristic functions has been greatly improved on the basis of Beidou-2, realizing two-way transmission of information, and has been applied on mobile phones, which cannot be covered by mobile communication signals. The area can provide short message service, which makes the Beidou system promising in areas such as emergency search and rescue.

The Beidou-3 system is the first in the world to break through the Ka-band inter-satellite link technology, connecting all Beidou satellites into a large network. Yang Changfeng introduced that the inter-satellite link technology of the Beidou system is like establishing a “group chat” between satellites, ensuring that the Beidou system can achieve global high-precision positioning and navigation without establishing ground stations around the world.

Talking about the future development of the Beidou system application, Yang Changfeng said that during the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, the large-scale application of Beidou should be marketized, industrialized and internationalized. In terms of internationalization, Beidou will provide more products and services for overseas markets in combination with the “Belt and Road” initiative, “going to sea with ships and building bridges on roads”. At present, Beidou has been applied in more than 120 countries and regions around the world. With its low cost and high precision, it has become a high-tech and cost-effective public product provided by China to the world.

Yang Changfeng emphasized that the original intention of establishing the Beidou global satellite navigation system is to “serve the world and benefit mankind”. As the Beidou system is recognized and accepted by more and more countries in the world, Beidou is making greater contributions to promoting international cooperation in the aerospace field.

The conference is hosted by the UAE Space Agency. Global and regional satellite navigation system suppliers from China, the United States, Russia, the European Union, Japan, India, etc., ICG member countries such as Italy, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, Nigeria, ICG associate members and observers such as the International Geodetic Association, and Pakistan, Specially invited observers such as the International Maritime Radio Technical Committee conducted in-depth exchanges and consultations on hot topics in the field of world satellite navigation, such as system compatibility and interoperability, space service domain, and high-precision applications. Yang Changfeng led the Chinese delegation to attend the conference and proposed Chinese solutions on a number of important issues.
