Iran restricts access to Instagram and WhatsApp

The beating to death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini sparked mass protests in Iran. Network monitoring by NetBlocks shows that Iran has restricted the last two accessible social apps. Parts of Amini’s home province of Kurdistan have had virtually all internet outages since Monday. Areas such as the capital Tehran have also suffered internet outages since the protests first erupted last Friday. Iranian residents say WhatsApp can only send text but not pictures, and Instagram is completely blocked.
