Thank you!
“Is there anything that only the medium of comics can do?” – This question I thought about when I was choosing whether to enter the industry.
At that time, I was just a freshman in high school, and multimedia had not yet appeared. Compared with the more common entertainment at that time, such as novels, comics had a better intuitive reading experience. Compared with movies and TV, the most obvious advantage of comics is their convenience and freedom to read. There is no need to make a special trip to the cinema, nor to wait for a TV series to play at a specific time. You can take out a certain comic book you want to read at any time, and turn to a certain chapter you want to read at will.
Nowadays, with the rapid development of various new media, free reading is not just an advantage of comics. The multimedia industry has made entertainment more free and convenient. You can turn on your mobile phone, open the movie or TV show you want to watch anytime, anywhere, find any segment you want to see.
So is the comic industry still necessary?
First let’s take a look at some comics –
The medium of comics, simply put, is to use pictures to explain the story. Through the presentation and connection of static pictures, comics use its unique way to express the narrative effect of the story.
Time and space exist and do not exist in comics. Between square inches, comics can break the barriers of time and space through their own forms.
In the world of comics, time is not uniform and linear!
When we read comics, the feeling of time is completely different from that in the real world. Comics use the way of matching their pictures and lines to determine the rhythm of their reading time. For example, when expressing dynamics, the picture takes up more space, but it consumes a very short time to read. When expressing emotions and dialogues, under the condition of occupying the same space, reading consumes a lot more time. And different people, according to different reading environment and mood, reading time will be different!
The medium of comics has many similarities with many audiovisual media, such as: film, television, drama, games, etc.
I think the most similar is movies and TV series (including animation). This is also the main purpose of my admission to the Beijing Film Academy. I learned a lot from the courses of the film academy that are beneficial to comics. For example, camera angle, composition and color, emotional response to lighting, montage effects, etc., subconscious and subtext performance methods, etc.
While learning about the various elements of the film that can be applied to the comics, I was also thinking about which elements of the comics are different from the film’s narrative.
First of all, in the film, the lens language and narrative are usually completed through the editing of the video, so I won’t go into details here.
The composition of pictures in comics is the so-called storyboard, which is somewhat different from dynamic video media. Most of the existing comics use the connection of static pictures to achieve narrative expression.
Then the still picture is what makes the medium of comics special. Sometimes the connection between the two frames can make the reader feel dynamic, and sometimes it can also play a humorous effect or a montage-like mood change.
Secondly, comics have a very special way of expression, which is what we often call “comic language”.
Comics often use “ ”, beads of sweat, black lines on the face, speed lines, concentration lines, shock symbols, dynamic arcs, etc. This is the language of comics due to the limitations of paper media at the beginning of comics. . An art form created because of its limitations, not only can express a variety of emotions (such as anger, embarrassment, fatigue, panic, shock, etc.), but also makes static cartoons come alive on paper like animation.
Can describe mental activities very clearly and naturally!
Compared with movies and TV series, the psychological monologues of characters in comics appear as if they are their own inner voices, which is very natural. In movies and TV series, you need to use an actor to match the background sound, and the feeling is very different.
Just like the musical notes, a good comic work can produce an aesthetic effect similar to music through the rhythm of the picture and the picture, and the harmonious cooperation between the picture and the text.
The hard work of comic authors is by no means meaningless. Like the charm of literature, the narrative charm of comics is still not lost to the arts such as movies, TV, and games through the study of comic authors.
In addition, the art of comics has some other characteristics, which are not detailed here. Let’s continue to improve it when there is time…
