Issue 17, Telecommuting; How Programmers Stay Healthy; Naval Collection

I haven’t updated for another week. Basically, apart from work, I’m busy raising my baby and losing weight. After the epidemic, I feel less lonely when I am with my family. Writing and sharing are inherently lonely things.

Telecommuting

Employee surveillance software is managerial bankruptcy

Rails founder DHH has long advocated and practiced telecommuting. In this article, DHH talks about monitoring. Although some companies work remotely due to the epidemic, the company has installed powerful monitoring software on employees’ computers. For example, employees must be required to be in front of the screen, or to monitor keyboard input, etc.

DHH believes that this is a kind of incompetence of management, which exposes the insecurity and paranoia of managers. This is the worst management style, which turns the original trust at work into doubt and fear.

Even if some companies do not work remotely, they are still in a similar management model. For example, employees are asked to fill in the work content in detail, monthly, weekly, and daily reports, and some departments even detail it to every hour. I’ve worked for a company like this, and after filling it for a while, it feels like a complete waste of my life.

Due to the epidemic and family reasons, I will basically be working remotely in 2022, and I will only go to the office for a few days in total. During this time, I also realized the advantages and disadvantages of telecommuting.

The advantage of course is that it can save a lot of commuting time, at least an hour a day back and forth. This time can be spent resting, spending time with the baby, exercising, and more.

The disadvantages are of course more obvious. The efficiency of working from home is usually not as high as that of the office. Especially when the children are not going to school, I basically have to deal with it every half an hour. Sometimes work is entering a state, and children may come to interrupt the train of thought. Fortunately, Microsoft’s meetings are basically held online, and many things are also communicated asynchronously through email, so I don’t think it’s a big problem.

Another disadvantage is that there is no clear boundary between work and life. Sometimes I work less during the day, and I wait for the baby to sleep before I work at night. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and work, and I find that I haven’t washed my face at noon. In addition, after staying at home for too long, there is a sense of detachment, and there will be relatively strong social needs, such as wanting to walk and chat with colleagues and friends.

Without remote work and flexible working, I can’t imagine how I’d survive this stage with two young kids. In general, I think the position of programmer is very suitable for telecommuting. Our means of production are computers, which is a natural advantage.

Of course, some people don’t like telecommuting. For example, Musk posted some time ago that Telsla requires employees to return to the office. Each company has a different management style. By default, Microsoft’s current domestic positions require the city where the resident office is located. If you need to travel remotely in different cities for a long time, special applications are required.

I have collected some job information that can provide remote working in China before remote-jobs-cn: Domestic remote working positions , if you are interested, you can take a look.

How programmers stay healthy

10 tips to stay healthy as a developer

In “1Q84”, Haruki Murakami wrote:

The flesh is the temple of man, and no matter what is sacrificed there, it should be stronger, more beautiful and clean.

The mental work is also physical work in the end. Haruki Murakami uses running and triathlon to exercise his body and toughness, and keep his energy full.

This article talks about how programmers can stay healthy. Sitting for a long time will bring many health risks. The points written in this article are also clichés, such as maintaining a correct sitting posture, drinking more water, resting more, maintaining sleep, etc., but I do not agree with the point of not being hungry.

After turning 34, I really feel physically and mentally not as good as before. When we were young we thought we would go on forever and nothing could beat me, but within a few years we were usually slapped in the face.

I have more physical problems now, some are caused by sedentary time and lack of exercise, some are problems that I had when I was young, and some are caused by aging. Every year before the physical examination, I feel a little worried, just like the feeling of being a student when the exam is approaching.

Naturally, my energy is a little worse. Now I feel sleepy after 11 o’clock in the evening. If I don’t sleep well at night because the child is noisy, it will take several days to adjust.

Because of telecommuting for half a year, my weight has increased by about 5 pounds. I’m more sensitive to weight gain and show up quickly on my tummy and face, so I’ve recently started losing weight again.

My approach is usually exercise and fasting. I started playing basketball again a few weeks ago. After playing a few times, I found that the left knee was still not good, and it would be sore after exercise. Because I sprained a basketball a few years ago, and knee injuries are usually difficult to fully recover. I tried swimming last year, and it’s a very sedentary sport.

Recently I started to control my diet, eating less or not at night. This method is very effective for me, I can lose 3-4 pounds in about three weeks. I think that in addition to losing weight, another benefit of proper fasting is that it makes my appetite better. Because of the moderate hunger after getting up in the morning, the breakfast tastes more delicious. I saw someone in the circle of friends practice the method of bigu before, which seems a bit extreme and dangerous.

Recently I heard a podcast Happy 30 073 Comfort is a Crisis . It talked about how modern people have made themselves too comfortable, and that moderate pain and discomfort, both physically and mentally, is healthy. I recommend you to listen to this issue.

Regarding health, at the beginning of the year, I also read a book called you eat it: eat right to avoid getting sick, eat like this when you are sick , introduce 7 major nutritional balances, Mediterranean diet and so on. For many Chinese, it is necessary to eat more protein, vegetables, and nuts.

Naval Tome

I recently finished reading this book, no, I did listen to it. I use WeChat to read, and after using it for a while, I have become accustomed to using AI voice to listen to books, and now almost half of my books are done this way.

The book “Naval Collection” did not give me a sense of enlightenment, perhaps because many of the views in it have been exposed to me before. It’s highly recommended for those who haven’t read it, though. They’re all concise advice about work, wealth, happiness, and health.

I also introduced the book “Millionaire Fast Track” before, and there are some similar points in it. Compared with the two books, I prefer the “Naval Collection”.

The last part of the book recommends a lot of books, including Siddhartha and Gibran’s The Prophet, which resonates with me in particular because I’ve also recently linked these two books. When I first started using WeChat to read, I finished listening to Siddhartha by chance. This book is especially suitable for listening. After listening to it, I thought of The Prophet, which I had read many years ago.

The two books have something in common, some religious, beautifully written, poetic-sounding, and I recommend them to you.
