IT House News on January 17, according to The Elec, LG New Energy has set a goal of mass producing “lithium-sulfur batteries” within three years at the earliest. According to industry insiders, it is said that LG New Energy plans to commercialize lithium-sulfur batteries as early as 2027, and aviation will be the first application area to be considered.
IT House Science Popularization: Lithium-sulfur batteries are currently considered to replace lithium-ion batteries, and the energy density per unit weight of batteries is about twice that of traditional batteries. In other words, with the same battery, the battery life of the new electric vehicle can be increased from 400 kilometers to more than 700 kilometers.
In addition to this, another advantage is that it can be used in cold environments without degrading performance, which is still a big problem for the widely used ternary lithium and iron lithium batteries.
Unlike ternary batteries that use nickel, cobalt, manganese or aluminum, lithium-sulfur batteries use a sulfur-carbon composite as the cathode material. In the battery, sulfur gradually transfers ions from the anode to the cathode under the action of a reduction reaction, while charging uses the reduction reaction to convert lithium sulfide to sulfur.
Of course, this kind of battery also has disadvantages. At present, the main problem is the decrease in service life when charging and discharging repeatedly. After all, sulfur itself has low conductivity and low energy transfer efficiency, so the amount of electrolyte must be increased.
An industry insider said, “All-solid-state batteries still have many challenges to overcome, as well as cost issues, so next-generation products such as lithium-sulfur have more advantages in terms of commercialization.”
