Jiayuguan City is located in the middle of the narrowest valley in Jiayuguan, on the highest Jiayu Mountain. The city walls on both sides of the city pass across the Gobi desert. Jiayuguan is famous for its dangerous terrain and majestic majesty, and is known as “the most majestic pass in the world”. It echoes Shanhaiguan, the “first pass in the world” thousands of miles away, and is famous all over the world.

When I went to the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Ring Road in 2020, when I passed Jiayuguan, I went to worship the Xiongguan Pass. I was shocked by the momentum of the ancients who swallowed mountains and rivers. Standing on the Xiongguan Pass, I looked around, surrounded by the vast Gobi.

There is a legend in Jiayuguan that praises ancient craftsmen. According to legend, during the Ming and Zhengde years, there was a customs repair craftsman named Yi Kaizhan who was proficient in the ninety-nine algorithm. As long as all buildings were calculated by him, the labor and materials used were very accurate and economical. Guan, the supervisor who supervised the repair of the customs, asked him to calculate the number of bricks used in Jiayuguan. After careful calculation, Yi Kaizhan said: “Ninety-nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine bricks are needed.” The supervisor Guan Yiyan said: “If there is one more brick or one less brick, your head will be cut off and the craftsmen will be fined for three years of hard labor.” After the completion of the construction, only one brick remained, which was placed on the back eaves of the gate tower of the West Urn. The supervisor was overjoyed when he found out, and was trying to deduct the wages of Yi Kaizhan and all the craftsmen, but Yi Kaizhan said calmly: “That brick was placed by the gods, it is a brick for the city, if you move it, The city tower will collapse.” The supervisor heard this and dared not pursue further. This brick has been placed in place, named Dingcheng brick, and this brick is still preserved on the Jiayuguan tower.
