Before starting to write, I actually had some hesitation, that is, as one of the creators, is it inappropriate for me to evaluate this collection of works? However, as a believer in the theory of ” the author is dead “, I think that whether we are readers or authors, we are absolutely equal when interpreting the same text. Although the author is the creator of the work, his mission ends when the work is finished. When the work is completed, the author is no longer the author, and we are all just ordinary readers.
This is a collection of non-fiction works that record the lives and emotions of LGBTQ people in China. It can be said that it is a rare first-hand material that can be used to understand the current life of LGBTQ people in China in recent years.
The anthology is titled “Deep”. In my opinion, this has a very special metaphor, because this collection of essays can also be called “elsewhere” or “dark place”. Because the relationship between China’s LGBTQ community and mainstream people is very subtle, you can say they are integrated, or they are on both sides of a natural moat; and the most amazing thing is, no matter which way you say it All seem to explain the situation of LGBTQ in China.
But one of the meanings of the birth of this collection is to eliminate the “curiosity” psychology of ordinary people towards the LGBTQ community, after all, LOVE IS LOVE. LGBTQ do not live “elsewhere” in another dimension, nor do they live in a “dark place” where the light of day is not seen. They are just a group of people who carefully integrate into the lives of ordinary people, but try to avoid the attention of ordinary people. So, they’re a bunch of people hiding deep but definitely not something you can’t find.
In addition to this perhaps somewhat far-fetched understanding, the more meaning of “deep” is to allow you to understand the depths of our hearts. There may be secrets hidden deep in our hearts, and perhaps the most precious memories of our lives, and we are willing to share them with you in order to eliminate stereotypes. Like heterosexual or other people in love, LGBTQ is full of bad sides, but there are also good sides. Love is always beautiful, no matter who we love…
In order not to affect other people’s reading experience, I try not to touch the content of a specific work when sharing this collection. Because in my opinion, this collection of essays is more like a gift. When you are reading slowly, it seems that you are unwrapping a long-awaited gift, and every action is worth your aftertaste. And I don’t want to be the one to sabotage your interest.
As society progresses, people’s tolerance for various emotions is also increasing. However, for the LGBTQ community, people still seem to have a trace of “maliciousness” or “hostility” that is unclear. Much of this “maliciousness” comes from a sense of strangeness and distance. For one reason or another, it is difficult for works that truly reflect the emotions and lives of the LGBTQ community to appear in front of the public. On the contrary, works that beautify or vilify the emotions and life of the LGBTQ community are relatively easy to be accessed by people, so some people have high or low expectations for LGBTQ. Those who have low expectations for LGBTQ will naturally not have a good impression; while those who have high expectations will often be “collapsed” by a few cases.
In fact, in our love and life, there is loyalty, there is also betrayal, and more is compromise.
My friend L has been living with his current lover for more than 10 years after his first love was betrayed by his lover. And they have come out, and their elders and relatives have sent blessings. Although my friend W did not choose to come out, he chose “formal marriage” through negotiation. “Physical marriage” is actually the compromise of LGBTQ people to real life, in which everything is like drinking water and knowing it by itself.
In “The Depths”, we can get in touch with more stories. Since this is a non-fiction narrative, the article will be brutally realistic. But I still think authenticity is a kind of power. Only when you are truly known, can we talk about whether you can be liked. The same is true for LGBTQ people. Our emotions and life will definitely not be as romantic and beautiful as in Tanmei novels, and more of them are rice, oil, salt, sauce, vinegar and tea.
“The Deep” is a key, a key that can open our hearts to each other;
“The Deep” is a bridge, a bridge that can lead to our mutual hearts;
“The Depths” is a ray of light, which not only illuminates us in the depths, but also allows you to see us in the depths.
