For this year’s Art of the Day, we hope to present more non-European and non-American art. So today let’s take a look at a man’s cape found near the town of Paracas from Peru. The ornate cape showcases 55 “bird-mimicking” figures with elaborate wings, fringed cloaks, headdresses and snake ornaments, holding ceremonial staff with trophy heads. These colors (dark red, pink, blue, dark green, yellow, and gray-green) are used in four different color combinations in the graphics. There are some incomplete figures around the edges. The figure on the skirt that matches the cape is also left unfinished, only outlined in gold thread, with solid embroidered gold trimming out the details of the outline.

It’s beautiful, isn’t it? Don’t forget to click to expand the image and you can see it in full screen in all its details!
