It’s Sunday and it’s time to admire another masterpiece from the amazing Rijksmuseum collection! Please enjoy. ?
The two painters, brother and sister Gerald and Gesina Ter Borch painted this portrait together in memory of their youngest brother Moses, who in 1667 at Landgard, near Felixstowe, England killed in a storm in Fort. Born in 1645, he had been in the Dutch Navy against the British since 1664. In this painting, Moses is surrounded by symbols alluding to his military life: time (pocket watch), death (skull), eternity (ivy on rock), and loyalty (dog). Moses was also a painter, and his work is also well known.
