Microsoft again adjusts store policy for selling open source software

Microsoft updated its App Store rules last month to include a “don’t try to profit from open source or other software that is usually available for free, and don’t try to overprice the features and functionality a product offers.” Microsoft’s original intentions are believed to be well-intentioned, to curb the practice of repackaging free open source free software into paid software. However, the open source free software license does not prohibit such behavior, and Microsoft’s regulations will affect all open source free software in its application store. This week Microsoft tweaked its App Store policy again , allowing the sale of open-source free software that is freely available, while allowing users to report fraud.
