Microsoft is making its Bing GPT-4 chatbot available to everyone today, no more waiting lists, just log into the new Bing or Edge with a Microsoft account and now have access to the open preview version powered by GPT-4. Microsoft is also upgrading Bing Chat on a large scale, adding many new features and even supporting plug-ins.
One of the most requested features from Bing Chat users is saving previous chats. Today, Microsoft said the feature will be available “soon” and will allow users to stop a chat in the middle and pick up where it left off again. Microsoft will also add ways to quickly export chat conversations and share them on social media.
Microsoft claims that Bing Chat now has more than 100 million daily active users and more than 500 million total chats since launch. It also said that since Bing Chat was first launched, daily installs of the Bing mobile app have quadrupled compared to normal.
The launch of the open preview comes nearly two months after Microsoft attempted to remove the waiting list for its new Bing chat feature. The chat tool was initially launched in a private preview in February, and Microsoft has since gradually opened it up.
Microsoft is now adding even more smart features to Bing Chat, including image and video results, new Bing and Edge Actions features, persistent chat and history, and plugin support. It’s worth noting that plugin support will be a key addition for developers and Bing Chat going forward.
In March, Microsoft launched Bing Image Creator, a way to use text prompts to create art with generative artificial intelligence. Since then, the company claims to have generated more than 200 million images with artificial intelligence programs. Today, the company said Bing Image Creator is expanding its reach.
Previously it only supported English, but now this AI art creator can accept text prompts in all of the 100+ languages Bing supports. The company added that it’s working on adding visual search to Bing Chat, so you can upload an image in chat and search Bing for things related to it. It will also add visual elements to searches in chat, including things like charts and graphs.
Microsoft also revealed some changes to its Edge browser related to Bing. Edge for mobile will also soon include page context, so you can ask questions in Bing chat about the mobile webpage you’re viewing. The compose feature in the sidebar can now also make adjustments to drafts based on your feedback, such as tone, length, wording, and more. Bing Chat will also offer improvements to summarization of large articles and documents within Edge.
In the coming weeks, people will soon be able to rely on artificial intelligence to accomplish more tasks with fewer steps. For example, if you want to watch a specific movie, the action in Edge will find and show you the options in chat in the sidebar, and then play the movie you want from where it is.
Microsoft added that it will continue to monitor the use of Bing Chat to ensure its safeguards are working on the ethical use of its artificial intelligence tools. It says:
Together with our partners at OpenAI, we continue to implement safeguards against harmful content based on what we learn and see in our preview. Our teams continue to work hard to address issues such as misinformation and disinformation, content blocking, data security, and preventing the promotion of harmful or discriminatory content in line with our AI principles.
Microsoft is working with OpenTable to enable its plug-in to complete restaurant reservations in Bing Chat and to enable WolframAlpha to generate visualizations. With more information to share at Microsoft’s Build conference later this month, we should get a better look at how developers will actually expand the chat tool, as OpenAI did with ChatGPT in March.
On the same day as the new information on the Bing Chat update, the CEOs of Microsoft, Google, OpenAI and Anthropic will meet with US Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington, D.C., to discuss plans to keep the use of artificial intelligence ethical and responsible.
Remarks: To access Bing Chat, you need to use the Microsoft Edge browser and open a foreign proxy server to access, otherwise it will automatically jump to the domestic version of the Bing search page.
